Fresh Facts on Retail: 2013 Year in Review

During 2013, the produce department averaged more than $47,000 per week per store, up 4.8% compared to the previous year. Increased retail prices in the produce department drove dollar gains; however, price increases contributed to slower volume growth and declines in some produce categories.

Demand for organic produce continued to grow in 2013 compared to 2012. Dollars and volume increased roughly 20% for both organic fruits and vegetables overall despite a slight increase in average retail price of both organic fruits and vegetables.

The United Fresh Produce Association has partnered with Del Monte Fresh Produce and the Nielsen Perishables Group to develop this quarterly FreshFacts® on Retail report to track retail produce sales and performance. Each issue reports on overall produce sales trends, top-line data on the top 10 fruit and vegetable commodities, details on growth in value‐added produce, and performance tracking for organics. The Q4 2013 Quarterly Spotlight focuses on top-selling organic fruit and vegetable categories within the produce department.
