Produce dollar and volume sales were positive during the first quarter of 2013. All but two of the top ten fruit and vegetable categories increased dollar sales, and the majority of categories also increased volume. Spikes in dollar sales occurred as a result of increased average retail prices.

Positive dollar and volume growth extended to organic fruits and vegetables as well as value-added vegetables. Value-added fruit also posted overall growth in dollar and volume sales, due to significant growth in its largest sub-category, fresh-cut-fruit.

The United Fresh Produce Association has partnered with Del Monte Fresh Produce and the Nielsen Perishables Group to develop this quarterly FreshFacts® on Retail report to track retail produce sales and performance. Each issue reports on overall produce sales trends, top-line data on the top 10 fruit and vegetable commodities, details on growth in value‐added produce, and performance tracking for organics. The Q1 2013 report also includes a snapshot of produce in the deli, and a Quarterly Spotlight focused on key consumer-driven trends within produce.
